Synopsis of the game:

"WORD ConnectioN" is all about how words SOUND. Those sounds are usually due to the syllables. And most of the time, the syllables sound like words themselves. The puzzles in WORD ConnectioN consist of common names or phrases which have been broken down into thier syllables, then each syllable is given a clue to help the contestants. Contestants solve the clues - to get the syllables - to CONNECT them together - to solve the puzzles!

The Game Board:

Contestants choose one of the 12 screens from the Game Board

Behind each of the screens is either a CATEGORY SCREEN or a "MISSING LINK"

When a CATEGORY SCREEN is chosen, the players are shown a PUZZLE BOARD (on the screens) which shows:

  • The CATEGORY corresponding to what the puzzle is
  • The NUMBER of SYLLABLES contained in the puzzle
  • The CURRENT SCORE for solving the puzzle correctly
  • There are 2 MISSING LINKs in Round 1, then an additional one added for Round 2.

Each round FOUR (4) puzzles are played. MISSING LINKs are NOT included in this count.

    The Contestant Area:

At the begining of the game, there are THREE (3) contestants: Two new contestants and a returning champion.

The contestants are seated in a pyramid fashion, having the returning champion on the top, and the two new contestants on the bottom.

On the front of the podiums are name plates at the top, using the W.C. typeface for the names, as well as a digital scoreboard, to keep track of the contestants score during the game.

On the top of the podiums are plungers, used to "buzz-in" to answer questions, as well as stopping the MISSING LINK score counter.

    The "MISSING LINK":

The MISSING LINK is the evil character in the game who takes away points when you find him.

When found, a special game screen comes on, to which a randomized number sequence is started, generating scores from 0 points, up to and including half of your current score. Using the buzzer, you stop the sequence to reveal how many points are to be subtracted from your score.

NOTE: The "MISSING LINK" may be referred to as the M.L.

    How To Play:

The game starts with the game board showing the 12 numbered game screens. For the first pick of the game, the returning champion makes the selection.

If a Missing Link is found during the first pick, there is no penalty (since there are no scores), and that M.L. is discarded for the remainder of the round.

If a CATEGORY is chosen, the screen changes to reveal the category name, then the entire board changes to the PUZZLE BOARD for that puzzle.

The player who chose the screen chooses which of the syllable clues they would like revealed. When chosen, the contestants place their hands on their buzzers to "jump-in" at the chance to answer the clue read by the M.C. If the player jumps in with the correct answer, they get the corresponding amount of points. If incorrect, the other players can jump in to steal. There are no penalties for guessing incorrectly. In the event all contestants answer incorrectly, the syllable is revealed, and the player who chose the previous clue chooses the next.

The correct syllable is then shown in the appropriate screen, and the player who answered correctly gets the chance to solve the puzzle. If correct, the player gets the amount the puzzle is currently worth added to their score, and if incorrect, chooses the next clue to be revealed.

If the puzzle was guessed, the game board alters back to the MAIN BOARD, and the chosen square now contains the WORD ConnectioN symbol.

After four (4) puzzles have been chosen and solved, the player with the lowest score is dismissed from the game.

During Round 2, the scores are doubled, and an additional Missing Link is added to the board.

    Scoring:

Players receive more points the faster they solve the puzzle.

In Round One, a correctly answered syllable is worth 10 points. A correctly anwsered puzzle is worth 25 points, plus 5 points for every clue not revealed.

For Round Two, syllables are worth 20, and the puzzles are 50 + 10/unsolved.

    Sample Puzzle:

Here is a sample puzzle for you to try.. we will give you the entire puzzle, but during the game only one clue would be revealed at a time.

  • The Category is:
    FEMALE SINGER

    What a baby
    calls it's mother

    Early
    Morning

    The sound you make
    after drinking 7-Up

Remember: All the clues are ONE SYLLABLE WORDS.

If at first the puzzle doesn't make sense when you put the three syllables together, then you guessed one or more of the clues incorrectly.
Re-think your answers, and the puzzle becomes clear when you connect the correct syllables.
